A New Outlook: How Cancer Changed Christine’s Life

Christine’s world changed in January 2024 when an abnormal cycle led her to schedule a doctor’s appointment sooner than she initially planned. What she thought would be a routine visit turned into a life-altering diagnosis. “I had my cycle, but after about the seventh day, I noticed it was still on,” Christine recalls. Her new doctor ordered tests, most of which were normal except the ultrasound. The doctor, concerned that Christine’s endometrial lining was not visible, removed her IUD and found a perivascular epithelioid cell tumor.  Christine later received the shocking diagnosis of uterine cancer.

The shock of the diagnosis took time to sink in. “I was actually at work and just finished my day like it wasn’t nothing,” Christine reflects. At the time, she did not fully grasp that the tumor was cancerous, but a team of doctors guided her through the next steps, including a hysterectomy in July 2024.

Christine’s journey was filled with challenges, both emotional and financial. She admits that the emotional effects, such as loneliness and confusion, were some of the hardest parts of her experience. Despite these challenges, she felt supported by her family, friends, and medical team. “My husband, kids, parents, work family, and my amazing team of doctors—they listened, loved me, supported me, and they made sure I wasn’t alone on the journey,” she explains with gratitude.

Now a cancer survivor, Christine’s perspective has shifted. “My husband and I travel every year now just to enjoy life,” she shares. “If I’m going to leave this earth, I know I enjoyed my time to the fullest.” She emphasizes the importance of counting every day as a blessing and being kind because we never know what others might be going through.

Through her experience, Christine has become an advocate for early diagnosis and urges other women to listen to their bodies. “Sometimes these conditions go misdiagnosed because they mimic other things,” she says, adding that preventative procedures must be prioritized when symptoms are present.

Christine’s battle with cancer has also led her to make lifestyle changes, including adopting a healthier diet and incorporating regular exercise into her routine. Reflecting on the journey, she shares that one of the most valuable lessons she learned is that life can change in a split second with no warning or explanation. To others who may be newly diagnosed, she offers, “You are not alone—find a patient group, family, and friends to help you along the way. You’ve got this!”

As she looks to the future, Christine is eager to share her story to inspire others. “I hope to meet people who have heard my story and feel like it helped them along the way,” she says. Christine’s journey is a reminder that even in the face of adversity, there is always hope, and with the right support system, much is possible.
