Janette’s Courageous Uterine Cancer Journey

Janette is a dedicated educator, single mother, and caregiver for her daughter, but an unexpected and overwhelming diagnosis in August 2021 challenged her idea of the future. Her journey since then has been one of resilience, determination, and an unwavering commitment to raising awareness about women’s health.
Janette had always been vigilant about her health, regularly visiting her gynecologic oncologist to monitor her fibroids. However, when she suddenly noticed unusual bleeding, she knew something was wrong. “Since I was past menopause, this was odd. I immediately made an appointment and samples were taken,” she recalls. The results confirmed a shocking stage I endometrial cancer diagnosis.
Janette felt a wave of confusion. “My initial reaction was fear, worry, and I was also very scared,” she admits. Despite these emotions, she focused on the steps ahead, asking her healthcare team critical questions about available treatment options, the nature of robotic hysteroscopy, and her chances of survival. The support she received from her healthcare team played a crucial role in her journey. “They were my biggest supporters and caregivers,” she recalls gratefully.
One of the most challenging aspects of Janette’s cancer journey was dealing with the emotional toll. She experienced loneliness, anger, and confusion. Yet, she found strength in her determination to educate and inspire other women. “If anything, I want to make more women aware and talk about it,” she emphasizes. This resolve led her to write and self-publish her story, “Endometrial Cancer at 65: Why Me, Why Not Me,” aimed at encouraging women to seek medical advice and not fear aging.
Since her diagnosis, Janette’s perspective on life has shifted. She has embraced a healthier lifestyle by making dietary adjustments and showing more gratitude for the gift of life. Her journey taught her the importance of regular checkups, second opinions, and relying on a trusted care team.
Janette’s story is a powerful reminder of the importance of early detection and the need for ongoing conversations about women’s health. “I am so grateful my cancer was found early, and I want to help educate other women out there,” she says. Janette found hope during her journey and envisions her continued gynecologic cancer advocacy supporting and uplifting other women facing similar challenges.
