Foundation for Women’s Cancer to Bring First Spanish-Language Patient & Advocate Education Forum to San Juan
Community-focused program to provide evidence-based gynecologic cancer education on April 10, 2026
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — The Foundation for Women’s Cancer (FWC), the foundation of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology (SGO), will host its first Spanish-language Patient and Advocate Education Forum on Friday, April 10, 2026, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Puerto Rico Convention Center, 100 Convention Boulevard, San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Held in conjunction with the 2026 SGO Annual Meeting on Women’s Cancer, the forum represents a significant step in expanding access to trusted, specialist-led cancer education within Spanish-speaking communities.
Presented entirely in Spanish, with English translation available, the program is designed for patients, survivors, caregivers and advocates affected by gynecologic cancers. The agenda includes sessions on clinical trials, treatment side effect management, nutrition and integrative wellness, emotional health and survivorship, along with opportunities for peer connection and discussion.
“High-quality cancer education should never be limited by language,” said Ginger Gardner, MD, chair of FWC and gynecologic oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. “By offering this program in Spanish, we are ensuring that patients and families have access to reliable information that supports informed decision-making and better outcomes.”
“Bringing this program to Puerto Rico in Spanish is an important step in meeting patients where they are,” said Sharee Umpierre, MD, professor and gynecologic oncologist at the Centro Comprensivo de Cáncer de la Universidad de Puerto Rico and member of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology. “It allows individuals and families to better understand their options and feel supported throughout their care.”
Healthcare professionals throughout Puerto Rico are encouraged to attend the 2026 SGO Annual Meeting on Women’s Cancer and to share information about the forum with their patients and community networks. The forum offers clinicians a trusted resource to connect patients with evidence-based education delivered by specialists in the field.
Ovarian, cervical, uterine, vulvar and vaginal cancers continue to impact Hispanic communities, reinforcing the need for culturally and linguistically appropriate outreach and education.
